How do you raise credit score on a low-limit card?

Question by mc1600: How do you raise credit score on a low-limit card?
I am on my first credit card with a $ 250 limit. I read that having a balance of no more than 30% each month would raise credit scores, but my dad says I should spend more since it is such a low limit. Is the 30% percent rule still true for low-limit credit cards?

30% is a guideline. The most important thing to do is pay faithfully on time every month. 0 is not much of limit – so stretching it a little is probably ok. Just DON’T miss a payment – and DON’T go over your limit. Remember to leave enough room for your finance charge.

Q&A: To raise credit score should i pay off credit card immediately or stretch out payments over a few months?

Question by sleighthames: To raise credit score should i pay off credit card immediately or stretch out payments over a few months?
I don’t have debt by any means, first and foremost. I am just starting to live on my own and build my credit and stuff. I got a credit card to help me do that and right now my balance is around $ 600. I can easily pay this off in one month and not think about it again but i heard that won’t raise your credit score any. Someone told me that it is good to leave some balance on your credit card. So, I was wondering should I stretch out the payments over a few months? I would like educational answers only please. I want to do whatever is best for my credit score.

it is better to pay off the credit card and continue to make small purchases paying the balance off completly every month. a remaining balance incurrs interest fees which you do not want.
Having the credit card open for a year, showing you pay the entire balance every month boosts you credit score (called revolving credit)

Introduction:

Late payment is the main reason for a bad credit report. To avoid a bad credit report all payments due should be paid in time and all the time. As most the time various factors such as how many times the late payment was made, what amount was due, by how many days the payment was delayed etc are considered for a bad credit report.

The bad credit report also depends upon the specific lenders. Some of the lenders may not report to credit bureau if you are late by a few days, however they may charge a late fee. As per one estimate if you are late for a single payment for one month, your credit score may go down by 50 points.

There are various agencies claims that they can repair your bad credit, you should not believe on such advertisements and try to take some steps yourself for repairing credit. Instead of taking help from these companies by paying their fees, you can get the information and take necessary step to repair your credit rating.

Dispute:

First of all you are entitled to receive a free credit report, if your application for credit has been denied. The company will provide you information within 60 days of receipt of your application and will give you name, address and phone number of the consumer reporting company.

If you think that some of the information is inaccurate, you may report it to the consumer reporting company in writing and by submitting it personally or by certified return post. You must include all documents to support your claim. You should request the consumer reporting company to remove the inaccurate clauses.

Consumer reporting company investigates the matter and also forward all the relevant document to the organization. The investigation is generally carried out within 30 days and if found disputed information accurate, is reported to the three nationwide consumer reporting companies so that your records can be corrected.

If the investigation carried out by consumer reporting company does not resolve the dispute, you may request to provide a statement of dispute in your credit files. You may also initiate to provide this information to the lender by submitting copies of the disputes.

Negative Credit Report:

If you have really a negative credit report, you will have to wait for seven to ten years, as most of the consumer reporting companies keep the negative information for seven and bankruptcy information for ten years. Generally the period counts from the date when the event took place.

The contract mentions details about your rights, payment terms, payment duration, total cost, total duration and any guarantee offered by the credit repair organization. You must read the contract in detail and must understand all the terms and conditions before signing it.

If you have specific problems with any of the credit repair companies, you should report the matter as most the states have laws for credit repair companies. You can report the matter either to local consumer affair officer or state AG (Attorney General).

Fix Credit History – Legal vs. Illegal Credit Repair

Fix Credit History – Legal vs. Illegal Credit Repair

By what I can tell, in the year an a half I’ve been reading and learning about credit, there are legal steps you can take to fix credit history.  That being said there is also one option I’ve read about that sounds good but might be more risk than a solution.

Legally, you can dispute credit issues, for many reasons and in different angles.  The more specific you are with your dispute letter the better if performs.  To fix credit history in this manner, you’ll have to learn a bit about credit and credit laws.  Laws that are in place to protect the consumer.  For example, when dealing with a collection company, you can take several different route’s to derail their attempts and have them remove what ever negative  information they’ve placed on your credit report.

One example of this is to request from the collection company proof that they can collect from you.   This technique takes the usual dispute letter much further.  Fixing your credit history becomes easier when you understand the laws.  It does make sense to ask this question.  Many times we assume, the collector on the phone has the authorization to collect from us.  An internal record is not proof.  They must possess an actual contract from the original creditor.  If they don’t they have to halt all collection efforts.  There’s also re-aging violations and other good legal tactics you can use to have them remove any derogatory information they’ve placed on the credit report.

The option that seems to be a little on the gray side for me is the option to use an EIN number to not fix credit history but create a new identity.  I know they advertise it’s legal but if you look into the correct use of an EIN number it can be a gray area.  EIN numbers are usually for entities.  How that applies to an individual I don’t exactly understand.  I’ll stick to the safer option above.

There are many other tactics used to fix credit history.  In my opinion, something like creating a new identity with a tax id number would be the last option.  If it carries the risk of landing me in jail or having the burden of defending myself of legal problems, I’m probably going to stir clear of it.
