The Simple Steps of Credit Repair
Get better interest rates and lending terms with a little bit of credit repair.
Your credit report is going to be checked by everyone before they decide whether or not to do business with you, so credit repair should be the first thing on your mind if your credit is damaged. You need good credit to purchase a home, a car, or any other large purchase that you can’t afford to pay for in cash. Landlords even check credit before they rent to a tenant and many employers look at the credit of their job applicants.
What Is Credit Repair?
Credit repair can also be called “credit cleanup.” It is a process used to remove negative items from your credit report so that you can increase your credit score. The more negative accounts you have, the lower your credit. Sometimes even one negative item can dramatically lower your credit score.
Can I Do My Own Credit Repair?
Credit repair is actually easier than most people think. You’ll first need to order a copy of your credit report from the three major credit bureaus- Trans Union, Equifax, and Experian. They cost less than each. Analyze your report for any outdated or incorrect information- basically anything that you disagree with. Make a list of those items and then write a letter to each of the credit bureaus telling them that you would like to dispute the item. Be sure to include your personal information (name, address, social security, date of birth), the account or trade line (Visa Card #123456789) that you are referring to, and the reason for your dispute (I was never late; This is not my account; etc). You can also send electronic correspondence if you purchase and view your credit report online. By law, the credit bureaus have 30 days to respond. You can follow up with additional letters or electronic requests if needed.

Rebuild Your Credit
This is the next layer of credit repair because you have to add positive trade lines back to your credit report so that you can reestablish good credit history. The easiest way to do this is by getting a secured credit card. Use the card responsibly and you should able to get an unsecured credit card in 6 months to a year. As your credit improves, you should add more positive trade lines. Just remember to pay all of your bills on time and avoid overspending. Maxed
